My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we'll change the world. Jack Layton
They have let Gerrard Kennedy out the closet, where he has been held incommunicado, for the last eight months or so. Let the great "progressive" fake out begin!

It looks to me like there's a lot of faking out going on in the opposition benches generally. Either that or Jack Layton's conversion to making parliament work--just as the Liberals shift to opposition mode--is a coincidence.
Don't forget Rob Oliphant's tabling of a private members bill calling for the Pension Benefits Standards Act to be amended so that pension investment funds will have to make annual disclosures of the Environmental, Social and Governance factors relating to companies into which pension funds are invested. It's a great idea, and a good bill. It's just hilarious that a Liberal is tabling it, as should it ever see the light of day (and it won't), there would be no way in hell the party leadership would support it. It's just a sop to the lefties at election time. The strategy seems to be that Ignatieff will take a centre right approach publicly while backbenchers will behind the scenes reach out to progressive constituencies with NDP-style private members bills. If the fence were straddled up any further, the entire caucus would be coughing up splinters!
Its interesting that the Liberals are paying attention to the War Resisters issue now. A number of NDP MPs have been raising this issue for quite a while.

ReplyDeleteOh, I don't think it is much of a coincidence. We will see how sincere it is when the Tories reject all amendments to the EI Bill.
