Bob Rae, the apostle of centrism, should read Krugman's latest. In particular, he should cut the following out and paste it on his desk for future reference:

Many pundits view taking a position in the middle of the political spectrum as a virtue in itself. I don’t. Wisdom doesn’t necessarily reside in the middle of the road, and I want leaders who do the right thing, not the centrist thing.

Bob has an unerring instinct to go to the middle, but when the middle involves deciding how much medicare should be privatized, for example, that instinct is a dangerous liability.

Bob Rae: Opposition Shrew

Bob Rae is quickly becoming more of a joke than he already was. He keeps talking about the NDP "taking the bait" on this issue, or "taking the bait" on another issue. What Bob doesn't realize, because he has never developed that part of his anatomy related to standing up straight, is that sometimes you have to stand up for principles. I don't think the NDP should be taking advice from a guy who backed down on public auto insurance at the first sign of push back. Bob is where he belongs, standing on the sidelines shaking his head at people who actually believe in something.

If the Liberal party wants to reach out to NDP voters, they are going to have to better than to send out two opportunists who are bitter because they see their opportunities shrinking by the minute. They are really starting to piss me off.

On Habitual Cliff Jumping

If we had an opposition, instead of Bob Rae, it would point out that we are already involved in a war in Afghanistan -- a war that has lasted 10 years and is not going all that well. They would insist we clean up our messes elsewhere before jumping off yet another cliff in another part of the middle east. But since we don't have an opposition, just Bob Rae, all we are going to get is "Where do we sign up?".

Bob Rae does on border security, what he has always done. He correctly identifies the problem and then turns his head away from it, because to take a firm position (cough, auto insurance, cough) might upset someone.

Two Things

First, take a look at the picture attached to this article. It portrays Bob Rae as he is, a constipated member of the ruling class. I have never seen such an accurate portrait. Way to go Bob, you have finally made it.

Second, "bi-partisanship" in Canada, just as it does in the U.S., means "giving in to the military industrial complex". This kind of cooperation is approved of and encouraged by the corporate press. "Coalitions", on the other hand, are interpreted as somehow against elite consensus (or at least out of their control) and are therefore discouraged and vilified by the corporate press. So note the use of bi-partisanship in the case of the blue Liberal establishment's backroom deal with the Harperites on Afghanistan. Our owners are pleased with this outcome, praise God.

Just Wait Until Next Time

Headline: Leaving Afghanistan in 2014 ‘a goal,’ not a deadline: NATO official. I expect that in 2012, Bob Rae will propose a brilliant new plan to extend our military deployment for another four years, so that our military can have the time to hand out puppies to each and every Afghan child. Prime Minister Harper will thank him and make it so.

Some More Advice As Mr. Dion Tries To Make Up His Mind

If I had a choice between listening to Warren Kinsella or Bob Rae, about election timing, I know who I would choose. Hint: He was never a failed premier from Ontario, who backed down from a fight over provincial auto insurance, even though he had a majority.
