Thought For Sunday
I wonder. Is the intervention of the Israeli Ambassador into Canadian politics and the Prime Minister's subsequent condemnation of criticism of Israel as "Antisemitism", preparing public opinion in Canada for an Israeli preemptive strike against Iran? I am not running for my tinfoil hat yet, but I see similar signals coming out of Washington.

If it is, it's a win-win situation, as with Osirak in 1981.
ReplyDeleteWe get to keep our hands clean & cluck our tongues at those impulsive Israelis, and Iran's nuclear program gets taken out. Others can hold vigils at the Israeli embassy and write articles about all the trouble that Tel Aviv is stirring up in the world.
In short, everybody's happy.
Ben, I think this latest event in Lebanon is the trigger. What do you think?
ReplyDeleteMaybe.
ReplyDeleteBut honestly, I don't see any event being a trigger other than an estimation by the Mossad that the Iranians have passed a certain point along the way to having nukes, and possession of intelligence sufficient that the Israeli government thinks that it can deal the program a blow that will put it back a decade or more.
And I don't think that Tel Aviv would even try to put a happier face on it. They'll just say -- as they did in 1981 -- that they did it, we know why they did it (i.e., preemptive self-defence), and they're glad they did it.
If they think that they can do it (logistically, I mean), and if they think that Iran's gotten to the point that they need to do it, they'll strike.
Or it'll be like with that site in Syria last year -- they'll do it, we'll be mystified by satellite photos, and then the story will come out later.

ReplyDeleteThat is their way, it is true.
So, no tin foil hats required here, and your point/worry stands.
ReplyDeleteIf Israel can strike against Iran's nuclear programme, it will.
My tinfoil hattery was more around the "softening up" of public opinion, but I take your point.
