The Winnipeg Jets

Proudly supporting the flag/troops. I have no doubt this will be a popular choice. The militarization of our national game has been ongoing for years and it also has the blessing of the pope.

  1. I thought it was awesome for that very reason.

But I can see why some wouldn't like it.

Personally, I'd've been happy to see the old jerseys again -- they were neat-looking, too.

  2. It fits for Winnipeg, though, what with the Blue Bombers.

  3. I see it as pandering. Plus, I loved the old jerseys and I am more of a traditionalist than I appear.

It was literally a cooperative effort between DND and the jets, with a payoff to DND charities.

It is not appropriate to have state symbols "licensed" to commerical ventures. It is, frankly, an advertisement for conservative miliarism. The military is a sharp knife and should always be handled with the utmost care. it should not be a privately owned sports mascot, it should not be a campaign tool for a political party. Look for historical examples of military symbols finding their way (with the express cooperation of the state) into commercial enterprises and then shudder.

  5. It is getting to be a blurrier and blurrier line between the state and the private sector. See here. http://www.pogge.ca/archives/003336.shtml

  6. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers were named in 1936 by a sports writer making a comparison to Joe Louis, who had the nickname of the Brown Bomber. Nothing to do with the military.

  7. Apparently the airport is very popular with hockey wives, so a plane logo is appropriate. Why did they not go with the avro arrow?
