It's Official

Urban Canada means nothing to our politicians. We are vassals to our rural masters and mere wallets to be plucked for the benefit of the hinterlands. No more pretense. No more lying to ourselves. We live in an upside down state where the minority rules the majority. No federalist party is willing to challenge the crazy system that allows the rural parts of our country to have a disproportionate power in our politics. Canada is finished. The loons have won. As for the NDP, they can go fuck themselves.

  1. I'm sorry you feel that way, Greg. Rural folks feels they are ruled by urban folks all the time.

  2. At least rural folks know they are a minority. Try being in the majority and still not control the parliament and then come back and tell me how it feels.

  3. I asked what's up with the vehemence in the opinion, and you didn't respond. Are you still planning to? Because I really don't see any reason for it.

  4. Jennie, two reasons. This offends my idea of how our democracy is supposed to work. I am offended by a minority government, rallying a fake majority, created by our completely undemocratic seat allotment system passing a major piece of legislation that could potentially affect the safety of people. I am offended that the opposition parties and in particular the NDP was not nimble enough to counter this odious strategy and in fact seemed to go along with it. I feel like there is no party in the House willing to stand up for true representation by population. I feel like my vote is doubly wasted. First, by the first passed the post electoral system and second by the heavily weighting of the seat allotment to rural areas. In short, this was the last straw. We have to call a spade a spade. In Canada today, urban Canadians are lesser citizens. The government and the federalist opposition parties have proven that our opinion matters very little to them.

  5. There is a real irony in shouting about "democracy" and decrying a free vote and saying that parties should instead dictate what their MPs should do every single time. Can you even see that?

  6. I think free votes is a lovely thing, in theory. In practice not so much. Just look at the U.S. system where free voting has led to which ever lobby spends the most money, wins. Hell, that's exactly what happened here on the gun vote. The Conservatives acted as a proxy for the gun lobby and blanketed the ridings of the opposition. Do I want that for more votes? No way. That is not democracy. That is government for sale to the highest bidder. Parties either stand for something or they don't. They either believe in something or they don't. If they aren't going stand up for what I believe in, they are not going to get my vote.

  7. It makes sense to not support a party that doesn't believe what you believe (generally, I wish more people did that, as then the parties might be more responsive). But what is it that the NDP hasn't done which would be to the benefit of urban voters? Why is the long-gun registry so vitally important? I don't see it.
