The Dog That Didn't Bark

Why did Dean Del Mastro bring this up during a discussion about the appointment of Tom Pentefountas to the CRTC (at 6:45)?:
"One area that I think that frankly all parties do a good job of staying out of is the awarding of licenses. Which is something the CRTC does, which I think needs to inherently ... it must be beyond political interference".
It kind of came out of the blue and was not touched on by the members of the panel. It was a very odd remark and given my paranoid nature, leads me to connect the dots. Why would the Harperites put their own man on the CRTC? Are there broadcast licenses coming up for consideration that the Haperites love to be granted, but would not like to have their fingerprints found on? It could be nothing, but on the other hand, it is damned curious.

  1. That's just them claiming / bragging that they didn't have anything to do with SunTV getting their license approved in Nov. (not that they wouldn't have over-ruled them if it were denied, mind you!)

Yes, but it's more them claiming / bragging that despite suggestions to the contrary they didn't interfer/intervene to get SUN TV a mandatory distribution license. Whether they never intended to give SUN TV such a license--or simply backed off once it became a public issue--is unknown, but they certainly want people to believe they never intended it.

  3. Tom Pentefountas has absolutely no credentials for being put in this position and is solely there to serve Harper. In Harper's world, there is no room for arms length regulatory or service agencies. He is either trying to control the CRTC or destroy it.
